As a 52 human priest on Aggramar I have managed to get my cooking skill up to 300 without much time or trouble. I hope to offer some advice for anyone wishing to accomplish such a goal. It is relatively easy and offers a new intersting twist to the game for times when the game starts to slow.

First of all take the newbie cooking quest. Every new race I have started has a newbie area cooking quest. Do yourself a favor and take a little extra time to collect whatever is asked for and complete the quest. You will most likely be killing these mobs anyway, so take the time and comlete the quest. It saves a lot of mindless grinding later on when you need materials for lowbie cooking. Most of it isn't sold on the AH because most people (like you) don't take the time to collect it as a newbie. Just make sure to find that newbie cooking trainer and get the initial skill, maybe even purchase some simple wood and flint so you can start working on the skill whenever you want.
